Media Inspiration: The Great Gatsby

If you are on any type of social media with friends who are movie or literary buffs, there is no doubt that you have been recently bombarded with links to watch the new trailer for The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann; for all of you who haven’t, click here to check out the trailer on YouTube. I’m sure it will take you no time at all to realize why we wanted to devote our first ever Media Inspiration to the preview of this roaring 20's era film extravaganza.

One thing I have learned through the years about Baz Luhrmann and the films he does: he is a master at taking history and blending it seamlessly with hints of modern day wonder. To me, that is the definition of different fashions coming back into style, sometimes year after year, or sometimes decades after they were originally worn. You may not necessarily wear the item or the style in the exact way it was worn before, but you reinvent it for the modern day.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: Why don’t you just wait for the stinkin’ movie to come out in December to do a feature on it? There are a few reasons for that: A) One of the trends for Spring/Summer 2012 conveniently happens to be 1920’s inspired fashion, and B) We’re just so freakin’ excited about it! Why wait?

The Great Gatsby is originally a book by F. Scott Fitzgerald set in 1922. The book is based around the theme of grandeur, which fits perfectly with this month’s theme: The Show Must Go On. This is made obvious in the trailer, which features dazzling parties, beautiful gowns and luxurious mansions all jam-packed into only two minutes. Seriously, is it possible to time-travel and become richer somehow?

So let’s cut to the chase. There are three main women I wanted to feature in today’s post: Daisy Buchanan (played by Carrie Mulligan), Jordan Booker (played by Elizabeth Debicki) and an unknown woman featured in the trailer that we call “The Girl in Green”. All three women embody the tailored elegance of the 20’s, but all in completely different ways.

Thought I would start off soft. Throughout the trailer, Daisy Buchanan, one of the main women in the movie, is pictured in pastels, whites and blacks. She, like many women in the 20's, loves her diamonds. For this outfit, we focused on that lavender dress you first see her in.

"The Girl in Green" who I couldn't find the name for, is only featured in the trailer for a few seconds, but the second she showed up, I couldn't stop thinking of that cloche hat! Cloche hats are such a well known piece from the 1920's, but in that beautiful greeny-teal the whole look is blown out of the water! Now, pants are definitely not a staple of a 20's woman's closet, but "The Girl in Green" was all about colour; an emerald green under a bright yellow, it doesn't get much more springtime than this!

Dress: ZARA / Link , Necklace: TopShop / Link , Clutch: Urban Outfitters / Link , Bracelet: Aldo / Link

Sorry, Ms. Baker, not everyone has the cash to blow on a magnificent diamond-encrusted black gown. But I did try to pull the same over-the-top drama Jordan Baker captures in the trailer. I couldn't take my eyes off that huge, sparkling bib! So I found, quite possibly, the biggest statement necklace in existence for under $50! The shapeless, black dress could be beautiful by itself but accented with all gold just makes brings it to a whole new level worthy of the Great Gatsby.

There is one more fun thing I wanted to share with you all, especially for those of you with long hair, is a faux bob tutorial! One of the biggest trends to come out of the 20's was women cutting their hair short, and they've  been rocking the look ever since. But, if you have long hair, a bob isn't necessarily something you think you can achieve unless you want to cut off all those beautiful locks. So I thought it would be fun to finish off this post with a tutorial on how to make your hair look short without a trip to the hair stylists. It's also a great way to see what you would look like with short hair if you're considering cutting it for the hot days of summer ahead!

Whether it's through the grandiose jewelry, or a simple cloche hat, I hope you've got a whole new perspective of how you can pay a small tribute to the cool stylings of the 1920's, and the aesthetic of Baz Luhrmann. And even though the release of the film is far off, one thing is for sure in the moment: one of the greatest things about Gatsby is going to be the fashion in store.

  1. I love the themed post! Especially your look for Jordan Baker. I have a feeling following your blog may result in me spending way too much of my barely-existent money on clothes... I'm really tempted to get myself one of those statement necklaces. And actually all of that awesome gold bling, to be frank.

Anyways, just ran across this picture of one of Naomi Watts' Cannes premier dresses. I KNOW, I know, it is obviously way out of price range for every normal human being, but I thought it really fit in with this post and that you would love it anyways!
